Donald Trump has earned himself a new nickname, thanks to his tendency to sneak in presidential power naps: The Nodfather.
As reported by The Daily Beast, the nickname comes courtesy of California Governor Gavin Newsom, who shared a series of photos showing Trump mid-snooze during a White House announcement on historic drug price cuts for Medicare and Medicaid.
The images really are pure gold. They show Trump slouched in the Oval Office, eyes closed, mouth slightly ajar—the whole package. Newsom paired the photos with a Godfather-style poster, adding a touch of Hollywood gravitas to the proceedings. “Saw this. Had to share,” his office tweeted, proving that political roast culture is alive and well.
The White House denies Trump was sleeping
Of course, the White House insisted the president wasn’t actually sleeping. According to The Washington Post, a White House spokesperson told the newspaper that “The President was not sleeping; in fact, he spoke throughout and took many questions from the press during this announcement, which represents a historic reduction in prices for Americans on two drugs that help Americans struggling with diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and other conditions.”
However, the masses on social media weren’t buying it, dredging up previous moments when Trump had nodded off at golf events, rallies, and court hearings.
Remember Dozy Don and Sleep Joe?
The nickname joins a growing pantheon of sleepy-related Trump monikers. Remember “Dozy Don”? Now “The Nodfather” firmly cements the theme. Ironically, it mirrors the president’s past attacks on his predecessor Joe Biden, whom Trump labeled “Sleepy Joe.”
MAGA would have had a fit if it had been Biden
The Independent wrote that Neera Tanden, who served as the director of the United States Domestic Policy Council during the Biden administration, highlighted the irony of the situation, writing on X: “I’m sorry but the national media would have had multiple strokes if Joe Biden was sleeping/passed out in his chair in the Oval Office.”
Trump truly struggled to keep his eyes open
Observers inside the administration have previously hinted that President Trump has a poor sleep schedule. The Independent reports that in September, Attorney General Pam Bondi said, “None of us can keep up with him; we always joke. I don’t know how he does it. I mean, none of us know when he sleeps. He’s working all the time, and it’s just constant for him.”
Team Nodfather forever
We aren’t sure if we are buying Bondi’s excuses for Trump’s Oval Office cat naps; however, we are certain that the MAGA crowd would have been LIVID if Biden had done the same. Regardless, we are certainly on board with Gavin Newsom’s new nickname for Trump: The Nodfather is a classic, and hopefully it sticks!
