The headless rooster

In 1945, a rooster named Mike achieved national fame across America after living for eighteen months without a head. A Colorado farmer, Lloyd Olsen, attempted to butcher the bird for dinner, but his axe missed the main jugular vein and left the brain stem intact. Because the brain stem controls vital functions like breathing and heart rate, the rooster survived.According to historical records, Mike could still walk, balance on a perch, and attempt to crow, though he only made a gurgling sound. To sustain the bird, Olsen used an eye dropper to feed liquid nourishment and grain directly into his open throat. The headless chicken quickly became a major attraction in traveling side shows, appeared in famous magazines, and earned a substantial monthly income for the farmer. Mike's unusual survival lasted for a year and a half until he tragically died in an Arizona motel in 1947. He suffocated on mucus when his owner could not locate the syringe needed to clear his throat. Today, the town of Fruita, Colorado, celebrates his bizarre legacy with a dedicated annual festival every May.
