Late one Thursday night, Mbwelle village in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State was thrown into chaos as gunmen stormed the community. The attackers unleashed sporadic gunfire that lasted nearly an hour, leaving residents terrified and defenseless.

Eight members of the Dakus family were killed in the assault, including Elder Iliya Mangut Dakus and several of his relatives. At least three others sustained injuries, while several remain missing, deepening the grief and uncertainty.

Local leaders condemned the violence. Samuel Amalau, Chairman of Bokkos LGA, described the killings as a direct assault on humanity and peaceful coexistence. He urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, warning against retaliatory actions that could worsen tensions.

The Plateau Police Command confirmed investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, community peace observers criticized the absence of security forces during the attack, noting that locals are planning protests over the perceived failure of protection.

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for stronger security measures and renewed commitment to peace in Plateau State.
