Just two weeks ago a client and I had a little back and forth on something I had initially told him I won't agree to and the next thing was that he sent like three of our recorded conversations and I was shocked.
Let’s talk about something many people do without thinking. You’re in a conversation, you press record secretly. You say, I just want proof.
But listen carefully.
Recording someone without their consent is not automatically illegal in Nigeria. What matters is how and why you use that recording.
If it was done to protect yourself or as evidence of wrongdoing, the court may accept it even if the other person didn’t know but if you recorded someone to blackmail, embarrass, or threaten them, it becomes a crime and that’s where the problem starts.
Also, posting or sharing private recordings without permission can amount to defamation, breach of privacy, or cybercrime under Nigerian law.
So before you hit record, ask yourself: Am I protecting myself, or am I setting myself up for trouble?
