From the United Kingdom, Sharon Spink, a 50-year-old mom of four, shocked many when she revealed that her daughter Charlotte finally stopped breastfeeding at nine years old.
Sharon says it wasn’t weird or forced — it was all part of what she calls “natural term weaning.” That means the child decides when to stop, not the parent. “It’s nice for the child to be in control of when they want to wean,” Sharon explained, adding that she never wanted to “force the issue.”
According to Sharon, it was Charlotte’s decision to keep nursing, and also Charlotte’s decision to stop. Toward the end, her daughter only breastfed once a month, usually when she wasn’t feeling great or felt a bit run down.
Interestingly, Charlotte had once said she’d stop when she turned ten, but the urge faded earlier than expected. Sharon says if her daughter had wanted to continue past ten, she would have supported it without hesitation.
Of course, not everyone approved. Sharon faced harsh backlash from critics online, but she stood her ground — insisting that the experience created an unbreakable bond between her and her daughter.
Her words:
“I just hope when she’s older, she’ll remember that feeling of comfort and security it gave her — rather than it being about feeding.”
For Sharon, it wasn’t just about feeding — it was about love, comfort, and connection.
