But the blobfish doesn’t deserve that label. Living more than 3,000 feet below the surface, where pressure is 80 times greater than at sea level, its body is built like a natural deep-sea marvel.
When pulled rapidly to the surface, the sudden change causes its body to expand and collapse—a condition known as barotrauma. The “blob” we see is simply what happens when an animal adapted to crushing depths is forced into an alien environment.
Down where it belongs, the blobfish looks completely normal—perfectly suited to its world. Maybe the problem isn’t the fish—it’s our perspective.
