This child is being constrained, but she’s not being punished. This is just how she’s kept, restrained for hours, maybe days, in silence, so that she eventually passes away.
The photo was taken inside one of China’s so-called “dying rooms,” a nickname given to parts of orphanages where abandoned children, mostly baby girls, often those with disabilities, were quietly left to die. Not with overt violence, but with a more chilling kind of neglect: no food, no touch, no words. Just time.
This little girl is one of them. The bamboo contraption is a prison built for toddlers. In places like this, babies were tied up so they wouldn’t wander, cry, or need to be held. They were left to rot slowly, starve passively, and fade quietly in government-run facilities that the outside world rarely saw.
