In Seinäjoki, north of Helsinki, police made a surprising discovery while investigating a stolen car: a mosquito. The insect had recently bitten someone, and when labs tested its DNA, it matched a man already on the police register.
The suspect denies stealing the car, claiming he was just hitching a ride. The car had been stolen in June in Lapua, about 380 km (235 miles) north of Helsinki, and was recovered weeks later in Seinäjoki, roughly 25 km from where it disappeared.
Police inspector Sakari Palomaeki said this was the first time Finnish authorities had used a mosquito to help solve a crime. “It’s not common to use mosquitoes. In training, we were never told to watch them at crime scenes,” he explained. “Finding a tiny mosquito in a car shows just how thorough the investigation was.”
Now, prosecutors must decide whether the mosquito’s DNA evidence is enough to press charges.
