On September 11, 2001, Cantor Fitzgerald lost 658 of its 1,000 employees in the North Tower—the single greatest corporate loss of life that day. CEO Howard Lutnick survived only because he was delayed taking his son to kindergarten. His brother Gary, also at the firm, was among the dead.
Vowing to care for victims’ families, Howard pledged 25% of profits for five years, 10 years of health insurance, and jobs for children who lost parents. By 2006, $180 million was distributed. By 2016, 57 children of victims were employed at Cantor.
