David Phillip Vetter was born in 1971 with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), leaving him without an immune system. From birth, he lived inside a sterile plastic bubble—no hugs, no fresh air—because even a single germ could be fatal.
In 1983, a bone-marrow transplant from his sister carried a hidden virus, and David passed away in 1984 at just 12 years old.
His story raised global awareness of SCID and paved the way for treatments that save lives today—a powerful reminder of how fragile our everyday freedoms really are.
