A 19-year-old French teen named Estelle nearly died after using a dark hair dye containing para-phenylenediamine (PPD)—a common ingredient in permanent dyes.

🔹 What Happened

Wanted to go from blonde to brunette and mixed the dye herself.

Did only a 30-minute patch test instead of the recommended 48 hours.

Within hours her scalp itched and reddened; by next day her head swelled from 56 cm to about 63 cm, earning the nickname “light-bulb head.”

🔹 Medical Emergency
Her tongue and throat began to swell, risking suffocation. She was rushed to a Paris hospital, where doctors gave antihistamines and other emergency treatment until the swelling subsided.
