Locked in an Elevator for a Month – The Xi’an Tragedy

Loading

In March 2016, residents of Xi’an, China, were shaken by a horrific discovery. Inside a stalled apartment building elevator, workers found the body of a 43-year-old woman—and she had been trapped there for over a month.

Here’s how it happened:

🔌 On January 30, maintenance workers cut power to the faulty lift. Instead of opening the doors to check, they simply shouted into the shaft and walked away.
🎉 The building went through the Lunar New Year holiday with the elevator shut down the whole time.
🔧 On March 1, when repairs finally resumed, the woman’s body was found inside.

Police ruled out foul play. The cause? Gross negligence by the maintenance company. Authorities treated it as involuntary manslaughter, and the case exploded into public outrage across China—fueling anger over weak building safety standards and careless oversight.
